This evening’s jazz quintet of musicians includes Elliot Scozzaro, professor of jazz saxophone at SUNY Fredonia, and James Burton III, professor of jazz trombone at The Juilliard School of Music in New York.  Burton says that until college he was entirely self-taught, discovering music that touched and inspired him and receiving encouragement and advice from the countless musicians he met. Influenced by Jackie McLean especially, Burton learned that performing and teaching are of equal importance.

Thursday, May 2, 2024. Jazz at Domus Fare. Pat LaBarbera. 41 W. Main Street, Fredonia. $25.

Toronto-based saxophonist Pat LaBarbera guests with the Nick Weiser Trio. LaBarbera’s playing style is inspired by the great saxophonists, especially John Coltrane.  His career has featured long associations with the bands of Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones and Woody Herman. Born in Mt. Morris, NY, Pat moved to Toronto in 1974 and taught at Humber College, one of Canada’s premier jazz schools.  In 2000, he won a Juno Award for his jazz recording Deep in a Dream.
